There was a time not too long ago, that most house and garden tools such as knives, scissors, axes,
shovels, and spades were rugged, well made, sharpened regularly, and lasted for years, if not a lifetime. In the era of physical labour, these tools were coveted and taken care of.
With the advent of modern technology, we now have an endless selection and supply of products and price points. Regrettably however, access to poor quality implements appears to be the biggest buying trend. These tools are most often made of poor quality steel, poorly designed and so cheaply made that replacing them annually or when dull, is a common practice. Today, stores shelves are stacked and stocked with plastic packaging of disposable products. These products generally don’t work very well, or last very long, before being thrown out.
With another growing season around the corner, we wanted to share our thoughts with maybe a little wisdom. After 30 years of sharpening, I think we are qualified to offer our opinions:
- Sharp tools are safer, make the task easier, which usually means finishing the job sooner, not injured, and a little less tired. Quality steel has better metal characteristics, meaning sharper edges with better and longer lasting edge retention.
- Better steel means your tools stay sharper longer, with longer intervals between sharpening.
- Sharpening is extremely beneficial and affordable compared to throwing away and buying new time after time. Sharpening is a fraction of the cost of replacing. Knowing that you can sharpen your tools and save money, allows for buying higher quality tools.
Every day, we hear of the environmental crisis we face. From global warming, plastics in our oceans, and so many pollution issues. Consider all of the above when making your next purchase or throwing something else away.
We titled our little rant today, as Finding Treasures in the Family Shed, as garden sheds, garages, cottages, basements and yard sales may yet be hiding some of the old tools from the past. Most of these treasures are now covered in rust and may not have been used in years, or considered their value until now. Not only do we sharpen, but we also refurbish and restore when possible! Most if not all of these gardening tools can be cleaned up, oiled and sharpened to once again work like new. Most will even outperform other tools available today.
See you soon!
